Kerala’s Onam lottery ticket sales have soared. The special Onam lottery, which was launched on July 6, will be drawn on September 7. As many as 1.5 lakh tickets, which cost Rs. 200 each, are being sold daily.
The state’s Thiru Onam Bumper Lottery carries India’s largest lottery prize pool of more than Rs. 20 crore. This year, the winner of the first prize will get 1kg gold and Rs. 5 crore.
The lottery is being sold at more than 100,000 retail outlets by over 35,000 agents, giving the poorest people in the state a chance to get rich quick. The sale of these Onam lottery tickets are monitored by the lotteries department, which falls under the tax department.
The Lotteries Act allows each state to run six bumper lottery satta games per year. When Kerala became the first state to launch lottery games in 1967, the tickets cost just Re. 1 and the first prize was Rs. 50,000.
Onam, which is Kerala’s New Year festival, lasts for 10 days. The festive season features snake boat races, elaborate lunches, and floral designs. While many people prefer eating the traditional Onam meal, which comprises 26 dishes, in their homes, a few enjoy having Onam parties in hotels.
