Sandesh, a young jockey from Matheran, steered Alaindair to a victory over Turf Striker in the Gr I Kingfisher Derby Bangalore, a racing event that had attracted a huge crowd of more than 20,000 horse satta enthusiasts recently.
The victory of Sandesh on Alaindair is not just a victory of the horse and the jockey. The win has greatly boosted the career of Altamash Ahmed, trainer of Alaindair. Besides, promoting and advertising the horse racing market in a big way, the victory has shown that co-owners, and not just the big owners, can also win the Derby.
When Sandesh won on Borsalino last year, he was a little known jockey; besides, not many expected Borsalino to win. This year, he had established his reputation as a jockey and a number of spectators expected him to deliver. His fans were delighted to see him dominate the race right from the beginning, not losing his nerve even when it looked for some time as if Turf Striker would win.
While Alaindair’s trainer Ahmed feels that this is his biggest success although he has won a few big races in the past, Alaindair’s co-owner Dr. Nevil R. Devialiwalla says that he plans to enter Alaindair for the Indian 2000 Guineas.
